A concrete example: a scanned photo page saved as PNG might be 6 MB and look identical to a 900 KB JPG — so JPG wins. But run a page of small body text through JPG and you'll see faint smudging around the letters where lossy compression guessed wrong; PNG keeps every stroke crisp. Getting a genuinely high-res image
Resolution is where most conversions go wrong. A PDF is made of vector instructions, so it's effectively infinite-resolution — but a JPG or PNG is a fixed grid of pixels. The DPI (dots per inch) you choose decides how big that grid is.
- Screen and social: 150 DPI produces a sharp image on any display and keeps the file light. Fine for posting a page to Instagram or embedding it in a web page.
- Print: aim for 300 DPI so text and lines stay crisp on paper. If you're printing a poster or blowing a page up large, go higher still.
- Cropping one element: want just the chart from a full page? Render the whole page at a high DPI first, then crop — you'll have far more pixels to work with, and the chart won't turn to mush when you zoom in.
