Rotation is measured clockwise. Pick the turn that matches how the page is lying now.
Use this when the top of your page is on the left — the classic result of scanning a landscape sheet or feeding a page in sideways. One quarter turn clockwise stands it up.
Use this when the page is the right shape but completely inverted — usually a sheet fed into the scanner the wrong way round, or a photo taken with the phone held upside down.
270° clockwise is the same as 90° counter-clockwise. Use it when the top of your page is on the right. If you overshoot, just rotate again — turns add up to a full circle.
Leaving the Pages box empty is the default and the most common case: the whole document was scanned or exported the same way round, so every page needs the same turn. Pick your angle, choose the file, and every page is corrected in one pass.
Mixed documents are the other half of the problem — a portrait contract with one landscape floor plan or spreadsheet in the middle. Type the pages you want in the Pages box and only those are turned:
Pages you do not list are copied through untouched, so a document with two different orientations comes out readable from front to back.
If a whole folder of scans came out sideways, select them all at once. Every file gets the same rotation and the same page rule. One PDF downloads on its own; several come back as a single ZIP so you are not saving files one by one.
Scanners and phone-camera scans are where sideways pages come from most often, and they rotate exactly like any other PDF — the scanned image turns with the page it sits on. Because rotating never re-renders or re-compresses anything, a scan comes out as sharp as it went in. If you also need the text inside a scan to be selectable and searchable, run it through Scan to OCR afterwards — rotate first, so the OCR engine reads upright text.
The single most common complaint about rotating a PDF — and why it happens.
Almost every PDF viewer has a rotate button, and in most of them it is a view control, not an edit. Acrobat Reader, macOS Preview’s toolbar arrows, Chrome’s built-in viewer and the preview pane in your email client all turn the image on your screen and leave the file on disk exactly as it was. Close the tab and the rotation is gone. Send the file to someone and they still open it sideways. Print it and it comes out sideways.
Rotation in a PDF is a real, saved property of each page — a /Rotate value of 0, 90, 180 or 270 stored inside the document. To make a rotation permanent, that value has to be changed and the file written back out. That is exactly what this tool does: it reads your PDF, updates each selected page’s rotation, and hands you a newly saved PDF. 90° right (clockwise) fixes a landscape page that is lying on its left side. 90° left — the same as 270° right — fixes one lying on its right side. 180° flips an upside-down page the right way up. Rotations add up, so applying 90° twice is the same as 180°.
