Preview What Your Signer Will See Before You Send a PDF for Signature

By EZ PDF Editor · Published September 17, 2026 · 5 min read

The fastest way to avoid a “which box is mine?” email is to look at the signing page yourself first. The Preview button shows you each signer's page, on desktop or phone, plus a sample of the finished document — before anyone is invited.

Most signing hiccups aren't technical. A box is on the wrong page, an initials box belongs to the wrong person, or a date sits where the signer's name should go. You usually find out when a signer writes back asking what they're supposed to do — after the request has already gone out.

EZ PDF Editor lets you check first. The preview is the real signing page, filled with the boxes you placed, opened in your own browser tab. Nothing is created on the server and nobody is emailed.

Where the Preview button is

Preview sits in the bottom bar next to the ⋯ menu and Download. It appears once the document has signers and at least one field placed — before that there is nothing to preview.

How to preview the signing page

  1. Add your signers. Click Collect Signatures, choose Email Signing Workflow, fill in Who needs to sign? and press Continue & Place Signatures.
  2. Place their boxes. Select a signer in the Signers panel and click the page where they sign. Use the menu on each box to make it a Signature, Initials, Date Signed or Full Name box.
  3. Click Preview. A new tab opens with the signing page as your first signer will see it.
  4. Switch signers with Preview as. The list shows every signer with their field count — for example Jordan Lee · 2 fields — so a signer with no boxes stands out straight away.
  5. Check the phone layout. The Desktop / Phone toggle shows the same page inside a phone-sized frame, with the mobile layout a signer on their phone actually gets.
  6. Click Preview Completed Document to see what the finished file will look like (details below).
  7. Click Back to Editing to close the preview and fix anything you spotted.

You can click into the boxes to try them — the bar says it plainly: “Fields you fill in during preview are not saved or sent.”

What the completed sample shows

Preview Completed Document builds a sample of the document with every box filled in, from the boxes you actually placed:

Every page carries a faint diagonal SAMPLE watermark and a red header line — SAMPLE · preview of the completed document · not signed — so it can never be mistaken for the real thing. It's built in your browser, and the marks sit where the real signatures will land.

A quick pre-send checklist

Preview, then send

Check every signer's page and the finished document before anyone is invited. Free accounts include 2 signature requests a month; Pro removes the limit.

Preview the email, too

When you press Send for Signing, the confirmation window has two more checks: Preview the invitation email shows the real email each signer will receive, with From, To and Subject, and Preview as signer opens this same signing-page preview. Running a live session instead? The Video Signing Room's invite panel has its own Email Preview and Document Signing Preview — see how to invite guests to a Video Signing Room.

The short version

Place your signers' boxes, click Preview, and you're looking at the real signing page. Switch signers with Preview as, check the Phone view, and open Preview Completed Document for a SAMPLE-marked copy of the finished file. Nothing is saved or sent — it's just the look you wanted before pressing send.

FAQ

Does the preview send anything to my signers?

No. The preview opens the real signing page in your own browser tab, but nothing is created on the server and nobody is emailed. Fields you fill in during preview are not saved or sent.

Why don’t I see the Preview button?

It appears in the bottom bar once the document has signers and at least one field placed. Add signers with Collect Signatures and place a box, and it shows up.

Can I see how the signing page looks on a phone?

Yes. The Desktop / Phone toggle in the preview bar shows the same page inside a phone-sized frame with the mobile layout.

Is the completed sample the real signed document?

No. It is built from your boxes in your browser and marked SAMPLE on every page, with a header line saying it is not signed. The real signed copy is produced when everyone signs.

Can I preview each signer separately?

Yes. Preview as lists every signer with their field count, and switching shows only that person’s boxes to sign.
